Super Stars

"Is this your band you're promoting?"

submission: Super Stars
date: July 10, 2009

Ikoncity, itself, posted its default version of this game months ago:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /486809

Aside from the music promotion, it appears you did little, if anything, to change the source material at all. The character sprites are, in fact, editable, but I'm sure you're aware of that, as you have edited the game's default music and background.

I doubt you needed to check over this multiple times or spend two months on it before submission.

I have nothing against anyone doing a little band promotion, but there's really no need to lie about the effort involved in its creation. This "edition" of iStars (as ikoncity calls it) should have taken no more than five minutes to "create."

As per your request: there are no errors in the game to speak of. All the errors are in your Author Comments, where you deliver falsifications about the duration and level of your involvement in the game's creation. Also, "payed" is an obsolete spelling (except when used in its nautical definition); "paid" is the current (i.e., accepted) spelling.

I hope this has been helpful to both you, the author, and to all the "newgrounders" that you spoke of (and lied to).

ACNE PANIC

"Oint-A-Pimple"

submission: ACNE PANIC
date: May 9, 2009

An amusing take on the traditional point-and-click shooting gallery genre, it lacks any real draw.

I like that the player's "chances" are labeled as "trust," but I don't like how it was implemented. I feel "trust" is what, in fact, what would be called for in this situation, however, "trust" generally brings with it the idea of being something that you can build and mend. In this game, when you mess up, there's no trust to build -- she will never forgive you. I think after completing a difficulty level without any screw-ups the player deserves to have a level of trust regained.

And as amusing as turning whack-a-mole into oint-a-pimple is, it needs something more to be considered a "game" (whatever that word may have come to mean). As is stands, it's a good distraction; it could easily be an acne cream banner ad. I played it a couple times (admittedly, just to be the high scorer of two people), but obviously found it entertaining enough for a second go.

For what it is (oint-a-pimple), it's funny. But to be anything of any real interest, it needs a lot more. There could be power-ups, for instance, e.g., a sponge that affects a bigger area (and thus more pimples), a temporarily transparent hand/wrist (as it is a visual impedance), etc... Perhaps there could even be multiple types of acne, as opposed to merely a pimple.

The game looks nice, it loads fast, and it controls well. I think, at the very least, the "trust" implementation needs to be adjusted. Everything else that I mentioned is really unnecessary if you were just going for the simple whack-a-mole that you accomplished, and accomplished well. I don't mean to be overly critical, I just want to point out the extra potential the game has if that is within its vision.

Game & Watch: God of War

"My Dear God (of War)"

date: May 1, 2009

I loved your first G&W game, Dodgeman; it was extremely well done, and faithful to the look and feel of the 'genre'. Vermin was always my favorite, and I played it endlessly on the G&W for Game Boy, hence my request for an online version. ;-)

I know that you said that you would see what you could do, but boy, oh boy, did you deliver! Here I am expecting moles and mallets... silly me. I got minotaurs and chaos blades!! This game is absolutely phenomenal and encapsulates the frantic insanity of the original. I was fiendishly excited just to see that 1) it was made (for me!) and 2) it was God of War style. But to fail and have a minotaur pop out of the ground and rape my face was super-icing on an already scrumtrulescent cake of awesome.

Superb recreation of a classic. I love this, and will be playing it whenever I have free time. Thank you so much for this!

Thanks so much for the awesome review! I'm psyched that you liked it so much! I've been really excited to send you the link since I started working on it. :)

I've never had a game called "scrumtrulescent" before! Best. Review. Ever. :)

Foosball DX

"Foospong"

submission: Foosball DX
date: April 6, 2009

This game is pretty awesome. It's a lot of fun, and definitely (at least for me) challenging. I was legitimately pissed when the opposing team made a goal, but I never felt cheated -- it was always my fault. This game has a nice polish to it, I like it.

And it never occurred to me while playing actual foosball, but it's totally a form of super pong -- and it's sweet.

Great game. Added it to my favorites.

"Pretty Good for what it is"

date: April 6, 2009

It controls nicely (it's very responsive), the collision detection is good.

The navigating the ladder could use a bit of work -- that was just plain awkward.

And, it might just be me, but it appears that Mario's walk animation was backwards. It looked like he was doing a strange forward moonwalk.

Other than that, it's a great start. I look forward to see where this goes.

"Pretty good for what it is"

date: April 2, 2009

Controls nicely, and looks good.

It may just be me, but the background appears to scroll a little fast.

Spacebar is a nice reload button, as it's easier to find then the usual 'R' key (I'm a baby and hate outstretching my index finger ever so slightly to hit the 'R' key, so what, right?)

Also, I appear to be holding automatic weapons... that don't fire as such -- my finger got tired.

I think I saw one of the scrolling frames come out of place, and I saw a grey box along the side instead of background picture. If it helps, I believe I was jumping backwards and shooting when this happened. I tried to recreate it, but couldn't. I hope that helps somehow.

Keep up the good work. :-)

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review.
I think i made the Grey box thing when i made a version that i could put on the web so there wouldn't be to many unfinished things in there that would slow down the game but this mean i just placed it wrong in this so it will be fixed in the next time. And about the background do u mean the sky or the city?

Bomb Squad 3:Another Game

"A Joy to Play"

date: March 29, 2009

Excellent work.

Though, you should add a button so the player can rotate the pieces, and a little window so the player can see what the next piece is going to be (ya know, for strategic planning).

Good call on the silence. All I could hear was the hum of my computer and the gentle clicking of my keyboard keys.

Well done, sir.

Light Snake

"Surprising!"

submission: Light Snake
date: March 23, 2009

I was less than excited to see yet another Snake remake (Resnake?), but this one totally delivers.

Having multiple levels as opposed to one big empty room where you eat pellets until your snake envelops the screen and you can't possibly move anymore is old and stale (I mean, at least save that crap as a bonus mode or something). So, bravo on that. Ten pellets, done, next level -- perfect.

So many "resnakes" do nothing to add to the original; I'd argue that most are worse than the original, actually. Yours takes our evergrowing protagonist and throws him in a dark room, and it changes everything. Just that simple little twist to the game play renews the whole thing, and now, finally, I can play Snake again, with a feeling of renewal -- it is Spring indeed.

Your lighting engine is cool to watch in action, and it adds a nice 3D feel to an otherwise two-dimensional game. Another great add was the shy 1up pellets that would crop up every so often to challenge me.

You could make a pretty sweet Pac-Man remake with this engine. I'd be down for some dark mazes filled with ghosts. ;-)

Excellent job. I'm adding this to my favorites.

The profile icon I have is the same symbol I have a tattoo of on my arm. It's the layout of level four, from the Microsoft version of Snake that came with QBasic, Nibbles. So, I have some history with the game, and love what you've done with it.

Tetris Short

"Pretty Standard Tetris Clone."

submission: Tetris Short
date: March 23, 2009

Nicely done. The controls are responsive, and the graphics are clean.

My only complaints are:
1. When a piece touches "bottom" it's automatically locked down, so you can't slide a piece into a nook. For example, I can't slide an L piece beneath a Z piece. (I hope that makes sense.)
2. Having a little window showing what the next piece is going to be would be helpful.

Pretty good, otherwise. :-)

Solar

"Really cool."

submission: Solar
date: March 23, 2009

I enjoyed this. This is a really cool idea for a game.

Catching planets that try to escape you is probably my favorite part. "Where in the #@*^ do you think you're going?!"

Finding planets appears to be luck-based, which I enjoy, because... well, isn't that how all solar systems are formed -- luck? I liked heading off in one direction and experiencing the infinite advance of space; it made me think a bit about things. Inspiration comes from the strangest of places, eh?

As I have added this to my favorites, I will seek this game out when I finally get my 360. Great idea, great game. Keep up the goods.
